Superman could have beaten him. It's actually really simple.

Thanos wasn't unstoppable. What about his fight with Thor ^should of aimed for the head, or when star lord got angry and messed up the plan. Anyway…

Thanos has the infinity gauntlet. It has the stones and all he needs to kill Superman is a snap. Before Thanos can even snap, Superman zooms over faster than Thanos could react and blasts, rips, cuts his hand off. In a direct battle, Superman wins. Do you not think Superman can take his hand off that fast? Let me prove it.

Thor can do massive damage and easily cut the hand of Thanos if he aimed. Superman was exposed to various forms of kryptonite and still fought and damaged Doomsday. Doomsday was completely unaffected by the equivalent of 1.2 million tons of TNT and 180 degrees of heat. Superman did more damage than that. Not to mention moving a tectonic plate. Also, his heat vision is up to 50 million degrees. He could take off his gauntlet hand.

Superman wins from there. Uses his speed and strength to defeat him. Sure Thanos is stronger than Hulk, but Aquaman has 500,000 tons of force in damage. Superman was completely unaffected by that. Adding the fact he held Wonder Woman as well who is stronger than Aquaman. That makes Superman atleast at the 2 million tons range. Hulk is high hundred thousands to a million.
